The Good Godly Gay: Martyrdom, Sexual Politics, and Assimilation in America | Religion Studies

Dr. Brett Krutszch's talk examines the ways secular LGBTQ activists strategically used Christian values and rhetoric to politicize the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard and, concurrently, to promote greater acceptance of gay Americans. The lecture will consider the ethical implications of how, in their political struggle for social inclusion, secular gay activists promoted a white Protestant vision of acceptable American citizenship and assimilation.
