MUS 090: First Year Seminar: Sounds of Asia: Music and Sustainability
3 Credits – CRN 40222

How does sound organize the space we inhabit? What can we learn about our environment when we listen to natural sounds, or organized sounds such as music?  In this course, we will use sound as a common denominator to understand our physical and social environments, and to examine how music transforms concepts into practices and abstract space into meaningful places.  Specifically, we will explore the role of music in sustaining communities using Asian music as case studies.  Classes will involve hands-on learning of Korean percussion and West Javanese gamelan, lectures on various Asian musical traditions, and student-led seminars on focused topics.

3 Credits – Writing Intensive – CRN 44773

This course will examine works by Western classical music composers that were engaged with philosophical and emotional concepts of Romanticism in the nineteenth-century. As a response to the rational Enlightenment culture of the 1700s, composers wrote about the power of Nature, emotions, primitive instincts, and a fascination with the grotesque and gothic. In addition to listening to works, students will consider related works of visual art, literature and philosophical essays. They will be required to attend exhibits, lectures, and performances.
