Advising Beyond the Requirements

Rules and regulations are relatively simple and easily understood. Helping our students to see beyond the basic requirements and affirming their proactive acquisition of the intellectual traits necessary for lifelong success is a high calling to us as advisers and educators.

Skills such as critical and creative thinking, analysis, communication, quantitative / informational / visual literacy, collaboration, and problem solving transcend majors and disciplines and are crucial elements needed to create the lifelong learning habit necessary to meet the constant changes ahead. As our students confront academic life and consider their futures, our ability to remind them of the goals of an Arts and Sciences education will help ground them in sound exploration and decision-making. Our personal examples—how we model our unique expressions of a liberal education—will be revealing and guiding to our newest students as they come to grips with where they are going and why.

Sincerely,

Cameron Wesson
